With the kings death, the throne was up for grabs and or in Williams eyes, it was already his. when the throne was "stolen: from him he wasn't best pleased
When the English rushed at him, he was able to strike back
When King Harold of England faced Duke William of Normandy on the 14th October 1066, they both used different tactics to try to win the Battle of Hastings. Harold had positioned his 7000 strong Anglo-Saxon army on the high ground at the top of a ridge. His army fought on foot and formed a defensive shield wall many men deep to counter the charge of the Norman cavalry.
a strong shield wall was used but it didn't break morals as the other side tried to penetrate the shield wall .
Some of the normans began to flee because they thought William was dead. they thought they where victorious.
William was believed to be dead, so the Normans started to flee as they thought they where victories, but it was later reviled that he was still alive when he took off his helmet. the battle then started again.
