  • Rainsford is revealed to be on a yacht with his partner, Whitney. Afterwards, when Whitney goes to sleep, Rainsford hears gunshots from the near island, so he looks off the yacht, only to fall off and swim to shore. "Pistol shot," muttered Rainsford' (Connell 62).
  • Climax
  • Rainsford tries to explore the island, only coming to a tall spiked gate where a man, a gigantic man shows up. This man has a pistol, ready to shoot Rainsford . Rainsford tries to act Disarming. "Don't be alarmed," said Rainsford, with a smile he hoped was disarming' (Connell 65). This is where General Zaroff comes in, telling the huge man to put down his pistol.
  • Falling Action
  • This man, General Zaroff seems to be a good one at first. He's been hunting his whole life, and is rich man, he even know who Rainsford is. But when he reveals that he hunts humans, Rainsford was sickened, and when he refused to hunt with Zaroff, he forced him to be his game. Before he sent out Rainsford he said, "Au revoir, Mr. Rainsford, au revoir."
  • Resolution and Theme
  • Rainsford hides in the forest, setting up traps for General Zaroff, in which he survives all of the. Rainsford does kill Ivan though, the gigantic man he had seen earlier. After his last trap, Rainsford runs toward a ciff, since General Zaroff and his dogs are chasing him. Rainsford Jumps and Zaroff thinks he's dead. "Then he leaped far out into the sea" (Connell 80).
  • While Zaroff thinks that Rainsford is dead, he sneaks in to his home. Rainsford waits until Zaroff gets ready for bed. He then reveals himself, where Zaroff accepts Rainsfords challenge, they fight to the death. The one who dies gets fed to the dogs, the one whom lives gets sleep in Zaroffs bed. "On gaurd, Rainsford..." (Connell 80).
  • It is shown that Rainsford survives, with the last sentence in the story. "He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford Decided"(Connell 80).
