Sinking of the Lusitania
One critic, Senator George Norris, argued that the United States was going to war for economic reasons only. Another critic, Senator Robert LaFollette, argued that the United States had gotten itself into war because it failed to treat the Allied and Central powers the same. He urged the government to remain neutral. President Wilson asked for a declaration of war against Germany on April 2, 1917.
