Storyboard Text

  • When Ryan arrives at Ellis Island he in inspected by a medical inspector, if he is deemed healthy and fit then he is let in, but if he is not than he is sent to Staten Island for quarantine. After Ryan was deemed OK by the inspector he was finally in the United States of America. Shortly after though he is confronted by a man(con-artist) who offers him a nice tenement to live in with low rent, nice living conditions and a nice neighborhood. Being new to the US and not knowing much English, Ryan agrees. Shortly after Ryan is also confronted by another man who offers him a job at a factory, the man says the job offers good wages and conditions, so obviously Ryan agrees.
  • To Ryan's surprise, the man lied about almost everything he told him, the rent was higher than expected, he had to share the tenement with 3 other people, and it reeked of garbage. Plus, the neighborhood was rough, violence, gangs, and not many police roamed around there to put an end to it. This is what many Irish immigrants faced when they arrived to the US. Since Ryan didnt know much English and was new to the country, he accepted any offer he was given, and sadly so did many other immirants in his position.
  • Poor Ryan didn't have much luck with the job offer either. The man promised him good wages and good conditions, none of these were met. When he arrived to work the boss said he had to work for 12 hours a day 6 days a week with only Sunday off. Little to no safety precautions were taught and there were often injuries in the factory. Plus, Ryan had to accept lower wages when the boss said because if he didn't then someone else willing to work for that wage was moved into his position. This is what many immigrants were challenged with when trying to find work in the US, low wages and long days just to earn enough to eat and have a place to sleep at night
