  • Monroe and Livingston successfully negotiate the acquisition of the Louisiana Territory for an approximate sum of $15 million. (April 30, 1803)
  • We accept your deal
  • Livingston and Monroe return to the United States and inform Jefferson about the deal
  • Gentlemen, were you able to acquire the port of New Orleans?
  • Yes sir
  • We also obtained all of the Louisiana Territory
  • Conflicted between following or going against his ideals, Jefferson is forced to make a decision regarding the treaty
  • It goes against your ideals of strict interpretation of the Constitution!
  • This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to help the nation!
  • We Agree!
  • Jefferson decides to follow through with the treaty, and it is ratified by the Senate with a 24-7 vote on October 20, 1803. (although he is met with criticism from opponents)
  • But you are going against your ideals!
  • ... and that is why I believe that ratifying this treaty will BENEFIT the United States, even if it goes against my principles
  • Jefferson commissions Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to expedite the land and search for a "northwest passage".
