Jacques Charles was a Frenchman whose main passion was as a balloonist. In 1787, Charles did an experiment in which he filled five balloons to the same volume with different gases. When he raised the temperature to 80 degrees Celsius, he found that they all increased in volume by the same amount.
Charles’ Law states that there is a directly proportional relationship between the volume and temperature of a gas when pressure is constant. As temperature decreases, the volume will decrease.
As temperature increases, the volume will increase
You take shorter breaths during the winter, since lung capacity will decrease in colder weather.
As the temperature decreases in the winter, the volume of the gas inside of the tires will decrease. When you start driving your car, the tires heat up and the gas expands.
When baking bread, the carbon dioxide bubbles from the yeast expand because of the rising temperature in the oven, causing the bread to rise.
