Storyboard Text

  • What have I done wrong?
  •  I apologize to you all, but I would like to announce that Jonas has been selected as the next receiver of memory.
  •
  • We had made a mistake with our last receiver, but we feel Jonas is right for the job.
  • "There were murmurs of confusion" (Lowry 74).  The crowd of people sat in the auditorium, with looks of shock faces, and feelings of sympathy for Jonas. The person who was the most stressed was Jonas, because he was wondering what he could have done wrong. Everyone was wondering if the Chief Elder had perhaps made a mistake.
  • Intelligence
  • Ability To See Beyond
  • Integrity
  • The Chief Elder ends the confusion when she apologizes to the crowd and Jonas for causing such a high amount of anxiety and stress.  "'Jonas has not been assigned,' she informed the crowd, and his heart sank. Then she went on . 'Jonas has been selected"' (Lowry 75). Jonas had been chosen to become the next receiver of memory.
  •
  • The Chief Elder recalls when the last receiver had been selected, and it had been a huge mistake. It was too upsetting to discuss, but she reassures the crowd that this time the decision was a right choice.
  • Jonas! Jonas!
  • JONAS! JONAS! JONAS!
  • The Chief Elder explains that Jonas is right for this position and their was no doubt in the committee of elders minds that he wouldn't be the perfect candidate. The Chief Elder explained that Jonas exemplified traits of intelligence, integrity, courage, the ability to see behind. The final quality is wisdom which they think Jonas will be able to acquire.
  • Jonas doesn't understand how he is qualified for this job, but in his moment of doubt one of his qualities is revealed. He has the ability to see beyond and he sees the audience change just like the apple had at the park.
  • "Then louder, faster. 'JONAS. JONAS. JONAS'" (Lowry 81). Everyone in the audience is enthusiastically cheering for Jonas, since the role of receiver of memory is such a important position with lots of honor.
