Kato Fried was born on March 3, 1925. She lived in a village in Smolnik, Czechoslocakia. When she was older, she moved to Sighet, Romania with her brother and dad. There, her father exported wood as a business.
In the year of 1940, Sighet was captured by Hungary. Later in 1944, Kato's father was taken by Nazis for listening to a British radio channel. In that same year, Kato and her mother were captured by Nazis and taken to Auschwitz to be forced into labor.
In 1945, Kato and her mother were rescued from the camp by Ally troops. When the war was over, the two returned to Hungary where they found her brother who hid from the Nazis. The family then moved to Germany where they stayed in displaced Jewish people homes until 1948.
