Atticus explains to Scout why exactly he is going to defend Tom Robinson, it is not the explanation that makes him courageous but rather the act of defending Tom and not being embarrassed by his decision. This is proven by him telling Scout of it and not simply lying to her or avoiding the topic at hand.
Even when threatened Atticus doesn't stand down which even with help shows commendable backbone and assurance that what he is doing is morally right.
"More scuffling and there came a dull crunching sound and I heard Jem scream." This shows courage from Jem for facing an opponent clearly better than him.
