  • Laurent Clerc was a deaf child at birth. He was born on December 26, 1785. He was born in France.
  • Clerc and Gallaudet leave for America
  • Laurent Clerc had trouble communicating with other classmates in his school because he was not able to understand what the students were saying.
  • Spreading the ASL language
  • On July 10, 1815, during a lecture, Laurent Clerc meets Thomas Gallaudet. Laurent Clerc learns how to communicate with others by Thomas Gallaudent. Gallaudent teaches Clerc the word hat to begin with.  
  • Starting an ASL school for deaf
  • On a ship, They leave to go to America to spread the ASL language, on June 18, 1816.  
  • Clerc and Gallaudet spread ASL to Boston, New York, Philadelphia, New Jersey, and many other places. Throughout October of 1816 to April of 1817 they were able to raise $12,000 and support all deaf child, as well as adults, to communicate.
  • Clerc opened an school for deaf which started off small. Alice Cogswell was the first to enroll to Clerc's school. The name of the school was Connecticut Asylum at Hartford for the Instruction of Deaf people. The Age ranged from 10 years old to 51 years old. Gallaudet became principle and Clerc was head teacher.
