Storyboard Text

  • Causes of the 30 Years' War
  • 1. Religion differences (catholic vs protestant) 2. Concern over balance of power 3. Calvinism was spreading throughout Germany, which added yet another religion to the region.
  • Defenestration
  • Defeat against the Danish
  • Protestants Finally Win!
  • During defenestration, that took place in Prague, Protestants threw Catholics out of the window hoping they would die but they actually lived!
  • Protestants or Catholics? No one knows.
  • During the defeat against the Danish, the Holy Roman Empire (HRE), and the Catholics will have yet another win against the Protestants. Leaving the Catholics with 2 wins and the protestants with 0 wins.
  • Effects of the 30 Years' War
  • 1. Germany- religious toleration 2. HRE/Hopsburg and Spain lose power as France gains power 3. Treaty of Westphalia
  • After losing 2 wars, the Protestants finally win against the Catholics, even though the Swedish king was killed during the battle of Lutzen (november, 1632). Sadly the Protestants were demoralized by the loss and the Hapsburg were able to reagain some of their territory back they lost.
  • Many say that the French won (which they are Protestant) because by the Peace of Prague (May, 1635) German Protestants states won religious concessions from the emperor and gave agreed to stop fighting. Even though they have agreed to stop fighing the fighting never truly stopped. After 5 years of negotiation, the 30 years' war fianlly ended with the Peace of Westphalia.
  • Treaty of Westphalia
