Storyboard Text

  • ONCE upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary
  • this explains that it was night and he wasn't very happy while he was thinking.
  • Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
  • The bird that flew in made his emotion turn from sadness to happiness.
  • But the Raven, sitting lonely on that placid bust, spoke only That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour
  • the raven was only able to speak one word, nevermore. except for his first word, lenore.
  • this means that he doesn't know if the raven was sent to be a prophet of the devil or if he is just a bird prophet.
  • “Prophet!” said I, “thing of evil!—prophet still, if bird or devil!
  • his soul shall not be lifted from him and he's referring to his soul in his shadow.
  • And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor Shall be lifted—nevermore!
  • this poem's theme is about the descent into insanity. It carefully tracks the steps from a state of nervousness to total psychological breakdown.
