Cortes and allies retreat to Tlaxcala to regroup for 5 months. During this time, the Aztecs suffer from smallpox and half the population is dead along with the huey tlatoani.
After regrouping, the Spanish, Tlaxcalans, warriors of Texcoco attack the Aztecs already with half the population. The Aztec stand the siege for 75 days. Cortes blocks off the aqueducts leaving them with no fresh water. The citizens die from hunger and contaminated drinking water. The great empire of the Aztecs is of no more. Cortes becomes Captain General and Governor of New Spain and tears down what was Tenochtitlan.
