Abdulrahman Zeitoun, owner of a painting contractor business, lives in New Orleans, Louisiana with his wife Kathy and their four children.
Kathy and the children go to her family's home in Baton Rouge to escape the Hurricane Katrina. While Zeitoun stay at home keeping an eye on their house.
But Hurricane Katrina becomes one of the most catastrophic storms in American history. The entire neighborhood is under nine feet of water. Zeitoun travels around the neighborhood in an old canoe, helping around the neighbourhood, since the police and National Guard are unwilling to help.
National Guard and other military have been sent to New Orleans to maintain order since there are looting and violence around the town.
Zeitoun and 2 other people are in Zeitoun's rental home. A group of armed law enforcement agents burst in, arresting them.
They are taken to a makeshift prison located in a bus station, where they are subjected to strip searches and interrogation without being read their rights or charged of a crime.
