In 1854 several Americans began migrating to Kansas. Kansas along with Nebraska wanted admission into the Union.
The debate on slavery in Nebraska and Kansas began. Nebraska did not want to be slave state, and Kansas did. Kansas has two governments in 1856.
The debate on slavery continues. Kansas is split because of this.
Charles Sumner who is part of the Senate gives a speech in 1856 to the senate called the ¨Crime Against Kansas¨ which highlighted his views of abolishing slavery in the United States.
Preston Brooks who is also part of the senate. Is angered by the speech.
Brooks begins to beat Sumner with his cane, Sumner was close to death. This illustrates how the debate over slavery brought violence and affected the Senate. This brought slavery to a national stage and was a cause to the abolishment of slavery.
