  • Claim
  • I John Andre has influenced Miss Sophia Calderwood the most throughout the novel.
  • Reason 1
  • I remind Sophia of her brother, which of course makes her feel angered. Because of this feeling, when Sophia becomes a "housemaid"(SPY), she wants nothing but revenge on me.
  • Reason 2
  • I mess with Sophia's mind, but do I do it intentionally? Sophia wants to capture me, but because of how kind I was earlier in the novel, Sophia is confused because she wants to hate me, not fall for me again.
  • In the novel Sophia's War, written by Avi, John Andre has been the most influential character on main character Sophia Calderwood.
  • Counter Claim
  • However, some may say I, William, Sophia's brother, is the most influential on Sophia.
  • "Immediately, I made a pledge: lady or no, I would rescue William"(Avi, 97). Although John Andre is not physically impacting Sophia in this part of the novel, he is mentally impacting Sophia. Before John Andre left to become a Major in the war, he said some things to Sophia that left her in confusion. This piece of evidence shows that because of John's words, she will take a risk at her own life to rescue an others.
  • Rebuttal
  • Despite William's reasoning, I continue to mess with Sophia's emotions throughout the novel. I make her regret life decisions, and at such a young age I try to make her choose one side.
  • "But-was not John Andre the enemy? Did he not refuse to help William and therefore bring on my brothers ghastly death"(Avi,277)? John Andre once again is confusing Sophia. He messes with her emotions, and almost intentionally does it. John Andre is a strong character, he does what he wants when he wants it. Sophia wants to hate John for everything he's done, but also wants to love him for all the good that he's done for her.
  • Conclusion
  • In conclusion, I John Andre have influenced Sophia the most throughout the novel. I have reminded her of William, played with her emotions, and made her become a lady.
  • "Then, at first opportunity, I crept back to Major Andres office.."(Avi,182). Sophia is currently an undercover spy working as a house maid. At her job she encounters John Andre, and begins to eavesdrop on conversations in the office. One day while she is cleaning his office a letter came, but John Andre was not there. This evidence shows how Sophia will do anything to take back Williams's life. Although not physically, she will mentally take back his life.
  • "If what you say is correct, I suppose they'll hang him"(Avi, 276). This show that once again John Andre is in her head. John Andre continues to live in her head for what seems like a life time. Once Sophia realizes what the consequences of John Andre are, she doesn't really want them to capture him. John Andre puts a lot of pressure on Sophia to see if she'll rage about him, or save him. In the end Sophia does not choose to save him, or rage about him, she chose to find him, and hang him.
