Storyboard Text

  • This isn't money?? These are certificates! How do we provide for our families??!?
  • We are in debt...so why don't we raise the taxes to own land! And, if a farmer can't pay... we throw him into prison and take his land.
  • The people that fought in the rebellion(soldiers in the revolution) were payed in certificates. The soldiers didn't have a way to provide for their families so they sold them.
  • If a farmer couldn't pay his debts he would lose his land and go to prison.
  • an armed group of farmers closed the Hampshire County Court of Common Pleas in Northampton, bringing all foreclosures to a halt.
  • Shays' own band of 600 farmers, most wearing their Continental Army uniforms, occupied the Springfield courthouse and prevented the Supreme Judicial Court from sitting there.
  • The new plan was they would mount a surprise attack and overrun the new federal arsenal at Springfield. There they would find all the weapons they needed. They expected that the men guarding the arsenal, also veterans who they hoped would be understanding of their cause...would put up little resistance.
  • The editor observed that the "late insurrections in the Commonwealth . . . must be considered as the cause of bringing the federal government into existence, at a much earlier period than would otherwise have been." I agree because if nothing would have been said about the situation, then nothing would have changed for a while.
