  • The Corrupt Bargain
  • Congress keeps on turning down my proposals!
  • In the election of 1824, John Adams, Henry Clay, and Andrew Jackson ran for president.
  • The Election of 1828
  • Andrew Jackson, supported by Democrats
  • John Adams, supported by Republicans
  • The House of Representatives selects John Adams after no presidential candidate won the majority of the electoral votes.
  • Mudslinging
  • Jackson is a military tyrant and drunkard!!
  • Well, Adams is an elitist aristocrat!!
  • Clay and Adams were accused of a corrupt bargain, helping each other get elected as president and secretary of state. Because of this, many of Adams' proposals were turned down.

  • By the 1828 Election, there were two political parties: The Democrats who favored states rights and the National Republicans who wanted a strong central government.
  • During the election, both parties resorted to mudslinging, attempting to ruin their opponents' reputation with insults.
  • Jackson won by a landslide. His supporters were the common man.
