Storyboard Text

  • My father decided to immigrate to America. He had to go by himself before us kids so when went with our aunt and uncle. When we boarded the ship we had to leave everything behind. I did get to bring a locket with a picture of my mother and the rest of my family.
  • The ship was terrible. We had to share tiny little spaces with other immigrants. They had very little food and medicine. My uncle got very sick one week into our journey.
  • We finally made it! We arrived at Ellis Island, New York. My family and I are very lucky that we have a little money and were very lucky to have had the best mother to give us an education. Most others are not as lucky to have an education of any sort.
  • It took us two days to get my whole family through the long lines for our medical and financial inspections. I prayed to Jesus that he would heal my uncle so that he would be allowed to live in America with us. My uncle was better by the time we got to the Ellis Island.
  • Once enough people got through the lines we boarded another small boat that took us off the island and to the main land.
  • Two days later we found our father who had settled into a community formed by other Irish immigrants. It was now time to start a new life!
