Lucille is a very uptight single mother. Her husband died from falling off a ladder and broke his neck. She wants her fourteen year old daughter, Matilda to marry someone from the wealthiest families; the Ogilvies. She is a stubborn, over protective, hard working mother. She is one strong Women.
She is a very stubborn woman who does not let her daughter be. She wants everything to be shipshape, everything organized. For example in the book it states that when polly died she did not let Matilda go to her funeral or let her pay her respects.
She is very over protective. In the story it said that she did not let Matilda go to the market to to get some ingredients for the coffee house. She said that Matilda was not allowed to go a place so large. She wanted her to stay home and do all the house work because she was to young to go to a place like that. But at the end she did go to the market.
Lucille is a very hard working woman . She works to maintain her family and never lets anything drag her down. It states in the book that when polly died she and her daughter had to do all of the choirs that polly was in charge of. And she always wakes up early to start her choirs and duties as a restaurant owner.
Over all no matter in what position she was in and no matter how stubborn or over protective she was she always worked hard. But, she did so to keep her family together and made sure they always had what they needed. She wasn't an easy person to talk to or to convince but she was a decisive woman who knew what she wanted.
