  • The tale begins at a buzzing carnival, where Montresor, the narrator, is introduced. Though this man on the outside is normal, on the inside, he is cruel and seeking revenge against a man named Fortunado, who insulted his family name.
  • Climax
  • Montresor meets Fortunado at the Carnival and decides that the time for revenge is nigh.
  • Falling action
  • Montresor fools Fortunado in believing that he purchased a cask of Amantillado. Fortunado, a wine connoisseur, demands to see it, so Montresor brings Fortunado to his vault. To keep him intoxtcated, Montresor gives him many alcoholic beverages. This distracts Fortunado from what's to happen.
  • Resolution
  • When Montresor leads Fortunado to a small room, he chains him to a niche on the wall, capturing him in the catacombs.
  • While Fortunado is struggling against his chains, Montresor begins to seal him away in the wall, and to make sure he is dead, he attempts to stab him with his sword through a small hole and then drops his torch inside for good measure. After his work is done, he returns to the surface.
  • Montresor got away with his crime, and 50 years later, Fortunado is still locked away and resting with the rest of the buried bones.
