"The Ransom of Red Chief" by O. Henry.
Want some candy?
Your dad bought you a silver- mounted rifle and a pair of moccasins!
You have ten minutes to run!
Two criminals one night drove through a neighborhood, and asked a boy if he wanted candy. They got the boy, Red Chief, into the car and headed to a cave.
The criminals take care of Red Chief and feed him, but they are already sick of him. So, in order to get him off their hands, they send a letter to Elder Ebenezer Doset, demanding money and trick Red Chief.
Wanting to get rid of Red Chief, the two criminals take him home and instead of Dorset giving them money, they have to give Dorset money. This is ironic, because the dad didn't care about Red Chief's absence. Usually the parent would do everything to get a child back and pay the criminals instead (Henry pg. 69).
