I believe that Greg and Rowley's friendship is a toxic one, because Greg is needy, petty, and selfish. Some of the things in a toxic friendship. In Hard Luck there are times when Greg makes Rowley do things for him, the pages that show Greg using Rowley are on 10, 8, and 13
Greg makes Rowley be the "look out" for Rebel's poop. But he could have at least taken turns being the look out with Rowley. You can find the scene above on page 10. In the scene Rowley screams, meaning he probably stepped in the poop. Greg is using Rowley to his benefit.
Greg makes Rowley do his cursive homework. He pays him in peanut butter crackers when really he should be paying him money. Greg is too lazy to even attempt to do his cursive work, so he gives it to Rowley. Which gives him twice as much work. The scene above can be found on page 8
Greg also makes rowley carry his bag. Greg thinks that his body isn't built to carry heavy stuff. But he can try to build up his body muscles to carry his bag. Greg always gives Rowley his bag to carry whenever they walk together. He treats him like a butler, but I'm pretty sure that he wouldn't like it if Rowley treated him like that. The scene above is found on page 13.
Greg didn't know that he had such a good friend until he found out that Rowley got a girlfriend named Abigal. Since then he's noticed that Rowley ignored him and hung out with Abigal more. With Rowley with Abigal it's like they're in their own little world. With out Rowley Greg has been lonely and in a big mess.
With Greg treating Rowley as a slave, servant, or butler. And Rowley ignoring Greg, having all his attention on Abigal. The two of them have a toxic friendship. One has used the other to his benefit his self, while the other has ignored his friend and most likely blocked him from most of his life. So this proves that both of them have a somewhat toxic friendship.
