Okonkwo shoots a citizen and kills them on accident. This is a crime in Igbo culture, and he is sent on a 7 year exile to the motherland.
"His life had been ruled by great passion-to become one of the lords of the clan. That had been his life-spring. And he had all but achieved it. Then everything has been broken. He had been cast out of his clan like a fish onto a dry, sandy beach, painting." (Achebe 131)
Anagnorisis:when the hero makes a critical discovery.
"There were many men and women in Umuofia who did not feel as strongly as Okonkwo about the new dispensation." (Achebe 178)
Okonkwo returns home from his 7 year exile to find white men building churches
"His body is evil, and only strangers may touch it." (Achebe 207)
Catharsis: the audience left with fear and pity of the hero
After Okonkwo killed a messenger with a machete he left, and hung himself
