" A very little boy stood upon a heap of gravel for the honor of Rum Alley. He was throwing stones at howling urchins from Devil's Row who were circling madly about the heap and pelting at him" (Ch.1).
"Eh, Gawd, child, what is it dis time? Is yer fader beatin' yer mudder, or yer mudder beatin' yer fader?" (Ch.2)
"Give me deh can. See?" said the man, threateningly" (Ch.3).
"'Say, Pete,' said Maggie, leaning forward, 'dis is great.' 'Sure,' said Pete, with proper complacence" (Ch.7).
"They bristled like three roosters. They moved their heads pugnaciously and kept their shoulders braced. The nervous muscles about each mouth twitched with a forced smile of mockery" (Ch.11).
"She laughed. 'What a damn fool,' she said, and went" (Ch.17).
