Lizabeth and the other children weren't sure what to do with they're afternoon. Then they decided to go to Miss Lottie's to disturb her flowers. Lizabeth didn't like this idea but reluctantly followed her brother and friends to Miss Lottie's house.
That night, Lizabeth lay silently in her bed listening to her parents argue about jobs and money. This upset her, so she woke her brother and ran out the door without waiting for him. He chased after her, all the way to Miss Lottie's house.
Lizabeth destroyed all of Miss Lottie's marigolds that night. As she ripped out the beautiful orange and yellow flowers she realized that she wasn't a child anymore, and destroying Miss Lottie's flowers was her last childish act. When Lizabeth saw the sad expression on Miss Lottie's face, she realized the Marigolds were the only bit of hope and beauty she had left.
