The novel takes place in rural Georgia in the early 1900's.
Celie is a 14 year old girl who is physically and sexually abused by many people such as her "father" and Mr.__________. After her father impregnates her twice and gets rid of the children each time, Celie is married off to Mr._____. Nettie eventually runs away from her "father" and writes letters to Celie but are never delivered because Mr.____ hides them from Celie.
Celie takes interest in a woman named Shug Avery who comes to live with them until she is no longer sick. She eventually builds Celie's confidence back up, gives her Nettie's letters, and gives her the confidence to leave Mr.________
Celie is eventually reunited with her sister and her two children which she thought her "father" sold and killed.
While this novel had many underlying themes, the most apparent one was the importance of having a voice and the power that comes with it. Through out the book you can see Celie develop in her narrative as she starts out as more submissive, but eventually her speech becomes more assertive and confident. This happens as she eventually discovers who she really is with the help of Shug Avery.
