Storyboard Text

  • Beowulf describing what will happen if Grendel is not defeated, Beowulf would rather die than live in a world with Grendel.
  • If Grendel wins, it will be a gruesome day (442)... No need to lament for long or lay out my body (450-451).
  • Unferth tells what he believes happened at the swimming contest and implies that Beowulf is not a hero, but someone who is out for himself, exactly what everyone else is thinking also.
  • Are you the Beowulf who took on Breca in a swimming match on the open sea just to prove that you could win? It was sheer vanity that made you venture out on the main deep (505-510)
  • Beowulf correcting Unferth's description of the swimming contest.
  • We'd been children together and we grew up daring ourselves to outdo each other, boasting and urging each other to risk our lives on the sea... Shoulder to shoulder we struggled on for five nights(535-538;544-545)
  • Beowulf tells how he spent his time defeating sea monsters rather than participate in a contest.
  • Time and time again, foul things attacked me, lurking and stalking, but I lashed out, gave as good as I got from my sword(559-561).
  • Beowulf tells how he has protected the sailors. This helps the people see that he is more than just a strong man, he is a kind hero.
  • From now on the sailors would be safe (567).
  • Beowulf tells that people that he will battle Grendel and defeat him. This will allow the people to now be safe and happy.
  • But he [Grendel] will find me different. I will show him how Geats shape to kill in the heat of battle. Then whoever wants to may go bravely to mean, when morning light, scarfed in sun dazzle, shines forth from the south and brings another daybreak to the world(601-606).
