  • Crooks is the only African-American in the book he keeps to himself and is a very protective person he takes pride is his few belongings he can be aggressive and hard headed at times.
  • "you shouldn't be here"
  • Whenever Curley's wife shows up we see her loneliness. It pours out of her in resentment and disillusion. She blames others (rightly so) but feels so disenfranchised that she does not know who she is anymore.
  • "why won't none of y'all talk to me?"
  • Candy is isolated in that after the loss of his hand he is unable to work alongside the other men and is reduced to the role of swamper. Once his dog has been shot Candy has little else to live for and is desperately lonely.
  • George has to take care of Lenny. He could abandon him, but he carries the responsibility. Having to take care of an individual with a disability has restricted George's life, opportunity to establish relationships, and forced him to move whenever something went wrong.
