Storyboard Text

  • My name is Katherine Elizabeth Barton. I am 11 years old (born in 1809). Before I moved to the colonies I worked as a maid for a house near mine in Plymouth, England. My family decided to move to the colonies because we thought we could make more money and escape religious persecution in the "New World".
  • I worked at this house.
  • In September of 1620, my family boarded the Mayflower with other Puritans. We set sail for the Americas and I was ready to start a new life. The boat was cramped and 1 person died along the way.
  • My father is a carpenter, my mother stays at home, and my brother is not old enough to work yet.
  • When we reached our new home, Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts, I was glad to finally be off of the boat. Once I found someone nearby who would let me work as their maid, I started work almost right away.
  • Back to work!
  • Since we are now in the colonies, my family and the other Puritans are free to practice our religion without persecution.
  • Life in the colonies is easier than life in my home country because my family and I don't have to suffer economically or because of our religious beliefs.
  • It's time for work.
  • I think that traveling to the colonies was worth it in the end, however, it was different than I expected it to be. I thought that by moving to the colonies, we wouldn't have to work as much, but I was proven wrong. But, I am happy to be here and happy to start a new life in a new world.
  • This is my new home.
