Food Deserts in Chicago
Mayor Rahm Emanuel speaking about the food deserts throughout the city. He discusses the struggles residents face in making the right decision in regards to the food they are consuming.
In areas that lack the availability of fresh foods there are a higher number of premature deaths due to diabetes. The same is true for premature deaths due to cancer and cardiovascular disease (Gallagher).
When grocery stores open in food deserts there are decreased levels of obesity, higher consumption of fruits and vegetables and a better overall diet (Systematic Review of Food Deserts).
This illustrates the different diseases that are more prevalent in these communities and how it may be effecting the next generation. A nutritionist describes the increasing rates of obesity in children today, often appearing in these areas without access to fresh food and where the easiest accessible food is at the local quickie mart. Other individuals speak about how it is necessary to inform parents on clean eating because they are leading by example for the next generation of consumers.
In efforts to improve these areas Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Company Whole Foods have committed to opening a new store in Englewood, one of the "food deserts".
