Menelaus is stuck on the island on Pharos, off the coast of Egypt. He had been stuck there for twenty days, and longed to go home.
Eidótheä, a sea nymph, met Menelaus and asks him why he is still on the isle and hasn't left yet. Menelaus confides to her that he has sinned and asks her who impedes his path and how to leave and get home
Ediótheä tells him that he must capture the Old Man of the Sea. She goes on to say that if he does so he will be granted sufficient knowledge to leave and he will also know all of what had happened at his home while he was away. Menelaus then asked how is is to do it.
Ediótheä explains to Menelaus that the Old Man sleeps amongst the seals at night. She says that a good plan would be to pretend to be a seal and grab the Old Man when the time was right.
Menelaus did just that and the Old man changed form many times while Menelaus still held on tight and never let go. He finally stopped and asked Menelaus who helped him plan the trap and what he wanted.
Menelaus told the Old Man why he caught him and the Old Man then told Menelaus that it wasn't his destiny to returm home and if he truly wanted to he needed to make another sacrifice to Zeus.
