Exposition: Whitney and Rainsford are on the boat discussing a mysterious island that’s been infamous has a reputation among sailors and the crew. Whitney goes to bed while Rainsford stays out and eventually hears a gunshot, he proceeds to climb a rail to hear better. Eventually climbing the rail leads to him falling in the water, he’s then forced to swim towards the incredulous island by following a gunshot. After fighting the elements with determined vigor, he reaches the island.
Rising Action: Rainsford wakes up on the edge of a jungle that fringed the beach on the island. Knowing there is life on the island Rainsford decides to attempt to find people. Tracking signs of human interaction Rainsford stumbles upon a house, and proceeds to enter the gated property. Inside, he meets a General, named Zaroff, and Ivan, his subordinate. They begin to converse, discussing hunting game.
Conflict: General Zaroff continues to speak of how he grew bored of regular hunting, over dinner, and tells of a new hunt that keeps him occupied on the island. General Zaroff’s main complaint that there was a lack of reason and intelligence when hunting animals. He however, found an animal with both of those things: a man. Once Rainsford hears of this, he becomes very distressed and calls Zaroff a murderer.
Climax: Rainsford tells Zaroff that he wished to leave the island immediately, but The General stops him and tells him he can either face the wrath of Ivan the Cossack, or be hunted by Zaroff. Rainsford reluctantly chooses the latter. Zaroff encourages Rainsford to get started as soon as he could, while Zaroff would start at a later time and wished his opponent to have a good hand; so that the hunt would be harder. Rainsford, powered by fear and panic, spurs into action immediately.
Falling Action: Rainsford begins his attempt at survival, and faces many trials with The General, Ivan, and the Hounds. However, because of Rainsford’s prior experience with hunting, he puts up a challenge for Zaroff. He sets traps to catch his dogs, he topples over a tree on the General, and he kills Ivan. Rainsford is persistent and determined to survive. After killing Ivan Rainsford makes an escape from the hounds and the general by leaping into the sea.
Resolution: General Zaroff goes back to his home after a day of hunting Rainsford, he eats his meal, goes to his library and reads, then retires to his room for a night of sleep. When he gets to his room he finds a figure standing there. This figure is Rainsford and upon realizing this General Zaroff questions him, Zaroff eventually admits that Rainsford has won, at this Rainsford tells Zaroff to get ready. Zaroff and Rainsford duel leading Rainsford to win.
