Eventually climbing the rail leads to him falling in the water, he’s then forced to swim towards the incredulous island by following a gunshot. After fighting the elements with determined vigor, he reaches the island.
  • Rising Action: Rainsford wakes up on the edge of a jungle that fringed the beach on the island. Knowing there is life on the island Rainsford decides to attempt to find people. Once Rainsford hears of this, he becomes very distressed and calls Zaroff a murderer.
  • Climax: Rainsford tells Zaroff that he wished to leave the island immediately, but The General stops him and tells him he can either face the wrath of Ivan the Cossack, or be hunted by Zaroff. Rainsford reluctantly chooses the latter.  Zaroff encourages Rainsford to get started as soon as he could, while Zaroff would start at a later time and wished his opponent to have a good hand; so that the hunt would be harder. Rainsford, powered by fear and panic, spurs into action immediately.
  • Falling Action: Rainsford begins his attempt at survival, and faces many trials with The General,  Ivan, and the Hounds. However, because of Rainsford’s prior experience with hunting, he puts up a challenge for Zaroff. He sets traps to catch his dogs, he topples over a tree on the General, and he kills Ivan. Rainsford is persistent and determined to survive. After killing Ivan Rainsford makes an escape from the hounds and the general by leaping into the sea.
  • Resolution: General Zaroff goes back to his home after a day of hunting Rainsford, he eats his meal, goes to his library and reads, then retires to his room for a night of sleep.
