The Funeral By:Katrina Madsen
The first time I went to a funeral I was 6 and was completely confused as to what was going on.
Why is everyone sad and crying? Is that person sleeping?
When my mom and I got up to the casket (at that time I thought it was a sleeping platform) my mom started talking to my uncle who had passed on and I peered into the casket.
What the heck is he doing? He shouldn't be sleeping at his own party.
I looked up at my mom with a confused look on my face. I asked her a question and she told me...
"Momma why won't he wake up? I tried poking him and he still didn't wake up"
"Our uncle has gone to a better place. He's gone now and is much happier."
It was at that moment I realized what the word death meant. I never really knew the man in the sleeping box that day but I was overcome with extreme sadness.
"So when people are in the sleeping box they're in a better place and not coming back?"
"Yes sweetheart I'm so sorry! but just know the person is in a better place."
