  • Today, we are solving for the length of sides in a right angle triangle using trigonometry
  • Find the lengths of the sides, to the nearest tenth.

  • To find side (a), we should use TANGENT because we are using the adjacent side and the opposite side.
  • tan 65= a/5 tan 65 x 5= a a= 10.7
  • Next, we want to look for side (b).
  • In order to do that, we are going to use COS because we are looking for the hypotenuse. We already have the adjacent side.
  • So, cos 65= 5/b cos 65 x b= 5 b= 5/cos 65 b= 11.8

  • There is not only one way to find the hypotenuse, like we just did. We could also use the Pythagorean Theorem.
  • Take 10.7 squared and add it to 5 squared. We would get 114.49 + 25= square root of 139.49, which is 11.8.
