Tantalus was a Greek king who thought he could fool the gods. When Zeus invited Tantalus to come up on Mount Olympos and eat dinner with the gods, Tantalos would steal the gods’ special food to give to his friends back on earth!
Instead of bringing the special food to the earth, he invited the gods over to HIS house for dinner. Tantalus tried to trick the gods into eating human flesh by putting chunks of it in the stew. Zeus and the other gods found out about his plan and were not happy.
For this crime, Zeus himself killed Tantalus. His torture was that he'd have to stand forever waist-deep in a pool of water with fruit above his head. As he got hungry, he'd try and eat the fruit but it'd raise higher, and the water would drain as he tried to drink.
