Storyboard Text

  • Exposition
  • Rising Action
  • Climax
  • In school during class, Maya gets a permission slip to go to the dance. She doen't want to take a permission slip because she knows that her parents will never sign it and let her go. Her parents don't let her go to these things because they are not from America and they don't understand going to different school events.
  • Falling Action
  • Maya's mom hurts her ankle and Maya needs to do her mother's work for her. This means that Maya does not get to go to gymnastics practice and right after school she has to go to the house her mother cleans. Also, Nurzhan gets in a fight at school with another boy because he was making fun or Nurzhan for being an immigrant and he was saying that he was not a real American.
  • Resolution
  • Nurzhan talks to his parents for Maya to see if they will let Maya go to the dance. Nurzhan talks to them about the dance instead of Maya because they blame Maya for everything that had happened so they are mad at Maya but not at Nurzhan. After Nurzhan talks to them, they let Maya go to the dance but only if Nurzhan is her chaperone.
  • Conflict
  • Before Maya and Nurzhan leave for the dance, her mom gives her a bracelet to wear. Her mom gives her this bracelet to wear because it has been apart of their family for a long time. Maya's mom was given the bracelet by her mom when she was 16. Maya's mother is giving Maya the bracelet when she is younger because it is different from when they weren't in America.
  • Maya gets to go the dance with Nurzhan as her chaperone. Although, Nurzhan doesn't go near Maya and he sits in a chair all night because he knows that she doesn't want anyone to know that in order for her to go she had to have her little brother as her chaperone.
  • One conflict in the story is when Maya feels bad for everything that happened. She feels bad about not stopping the fight with Nurzhan and she feels bad about what happened when her dad saw her with Daniel. This conflict in the story is an example of man vs. self because Maya feels bad for what happened.
