Della and Jim are struggling to think what they should get each other for Christmas, since they are poor. "One dollar and eighty seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas."
Della only has $1.87 to buy Jim a gift. "One dollar and eighty seven cents. That was all."
Della cut her hair for $20 to buy Jim a gift. "Will you buy my hair... twenty dollars" said Madame.
When Jim and Della exchange gifts Della realizes that she got Jim a chain for his watch, but Jim sold his watch to buy Della a comb for her long hair that was now non-existent. "Nothing like a haircut could make me love you any less, but if you open it, you may know what I felt when I came in."
They both put their gifts away until they can use them again. "Let's put our Christmas gifts away and keep them a while. They're too nice to use now."
After everything they learned a valuable lesson about love and sacrifice. "Each sold the most valuable thing they owned in order to buy a gift from the other."
