The story of King Minos, running his city

Storyboard Text

  • Welcome to my home! I am King Minos, ruler of this magnificent Minoan civilization, located in Crete (the Aegean region). Our culture has existed here since 2500 BCE!
  • Hello King Minos, enlighten me about your Minoan civilization.
  • Minoan civilization was based off of an efficient bureaucratic government under one powerful ruler (aka me), whose administrative records were kept on clay tablets to pass onto his successors.
  • Very nice! You seem like a very well liked king!
  • Unlike many religious beliefs of the near east, we did not build temples or have powerful priesthoods. We worshiped a single mother goddess, who was the principal deity, which reflected the important role of women within our culture.
  • Wow, very interesting. Usually women had little to no role within eastern cultures.
  • Considering we lived near such dominant waters, our civilization was based on large scale trade that ranged from Sicily, Greece, and Asia Minor to Syria and Egypt. We also kept our records on clay tablets and were capable of creating tall buildings, such as the most well known building, the "Palace of Minos."
  • You guys had some incredible achievements!
  • Art was an essential part of daily life. We were very well known for our vibrant paintings of scenes such as this one behind me. They show how unlike many other eastern cultures, women were major contributors to our culture, and took part in daily activities and festivities!
  • WOMEN WERE IMPORTANT? That's awesome!
  • I hope you enjoyed learning about our Minoan culture. If you didn't notice, many of our beliefs differed from surrounding eastern cultures. However, our civilization is incredibly happy here!
  • Thank you for teaching me about all of your ways. Minoans truly have a unique culture.
