How the Constitutional Convention solved Americans problems!
We need to get this Constitution done as quickly as possible! We don't know if the colonists will think we're limiting their rights if we add a Bill of Rights, anyway.
Southern (Lives in slave state)
No! We need to include a Bill of Rights! If we don't, the colonists won't know what kind of rights they have, and that we're protecting them!
And so a compromise was created!
We created the Constitution, but then we added a Bill of Rights later!
All I'm saying is, why shouldn't we count slavery for representation? We would earn lots of representatives in Congress.
Northern (Lives in free state)
Why should we? The Northern states don't have enough slaves to count for it. It would be unfair. Slaves should be counted for taxes instead!
How DARE you??
So we created the 3/5's compromise! Each slave was counted as 3/5's of a person, and so the South didn't get too many extra representatives than the North, and they were also taxed similarly.
