"Passion there was none. I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He ad never given me insult. For his gold I had no desire."
"I placed my hand upon the heart and held it there many minutes. There was no pulsation. He was stone dead. His eye would trouble me no more."
"It grew louder--louder--louder! And still the men chatted pleasantly, and --they were making a mockery of my horror!"
He went on about how he loved the old man and that he did nothing to him.
He began thinking more and more about the eye on the old man and couldn't bare to look at it anymore so he suffocated him with his mattress and proceeded to chop the body.
The cops came later and he kept hearing a heartbeat. He thought the cops could hear it and thought it was the old man's heart. But, it was his own. He later grew to confess his paranoia with the heart beat and explain what he did.
