IT'S MORE FUN IN THE PHILIPPINES!
Before, the Malayans came to the Philippine archipelago in waves in coastal communities.
In these coastal communities, it is ruled by a "datu" who acts as the chieftain of the barangay.
MYGAHD! I HATE BETEL NUT!
The datu is the one responsible for the interest of the people, as well as making the rules.
The datu was on the top of the social hierarchy, therefore a "maharlika". They only marry the ones they belong with in the social class.
The "timawa" are considered the free men. They do things according to their will and they cannot be sold.
The "alipin" are the slaves. They serve the higher social class.
