In 264 B.C. broke an alliance with Carthage and invaded Sicily. This started The First Punic war. The Romans did well on land but suffered many attacks at sea so they came up with an idea. Since the Carthaginians had ships that ram the enemy, The Romans built ships to hook onto side of the Carthaginians ship to fight, rather than face the enemy head on.
In 218 B.C. Hannibal and his troops attacked saguntum, an ally of Rome. The fall of saguntum marked the beginning of the second Punic war. Meanwhile, the Romans knew they had to try something different with Hannibal. Instead of meeting him head-on in battle, they decided to lead him on a wild goose chase, keeping his army just outside of striking distance,This gave the Romans get more soldiers and caused the Carthaginians to run low on supplies.The roman republic defeated the Carthaginians with their tactic
After the second punic war hannibal asked for a private interview with scipio, to be held in an open area between the two armies.this was the first time they had met face to face. They spoke together at great length. Still the fight kept going on. Hannibal was defeated and carthage had to give up spain. Then when carthage rebelled, the roman army destroyed the city, spreaded salt all over the city and burned it down. And enslaved some of the people.
