Storyboard Text

  • Why did Northern free states oppose compromise?
  • I refuse to see slavery & agriculture expand North! Its just another victory for those states rights supporters!
  • One Evening in 1854
  • What did Northern free states believe about federal authority and Congress’ power to decide the fate of slavery in new states?
  • And not to mention Harold, its only fair that Congress has the authority to decide whether a state is slave or free!
  • What did Northern free states fear that the compromise would do to slavery and slave power in Congress?
  • Although it is true honey, the balance is 11 to 11, and with Missouri it would be 11 to 12. We cant allow that!
  • Dear Lord, please dont let the South get their way and throw off the balance in Congress!
  • The Northers did not want to see slavery expand into the North with Missouri, not to mention agriculture. The North simply viewed Missouri as yet another victory for state rights supporters
  • Why the South support it!
  • Northerners believe that only Congress has the authority to decide whether a state is free or slave
  • Northerners feared the compromise because It would throw off the balance in Congress, further the expansion of slavery in the North, and would empower the slave states
  • Southerners enjoyed the compromise since they get a slave state in the North, maintains the power in Congress, victory for state right supporters. Not to mention, its only a matter of time before Texas gains its independence and the 36 30 line balances out.
  • Read all about how the South support it! Maintain power in Congress! Slave state in the NORTH! Read all about it!!!
  • The Next Day
  • You disgust me! All the reasons you like it, we hate it!
  • Southerners believed that the state government itself should decide if a state is slave or free
  • Ugh! Those Southerners who think State governments should decide whether or not they are slave or free! So dumb!
  • The South feared that since the Congress made this law; they could also change this law. As the federal government exerts itself over slavery, the states would have less and less of a say.
  • At least those dang Southerners have something to be afraid about! Ha! Them! Scared about the government exerting themselves over slavery! They'll see!
