A celebration is held in the mead hall with all of Hrotgar's men. It is in Herot where the men gather to drink mead and get drunk.
Grendel, the murderous monster, lurks outside. He goes into the hall when everyone is asleep and slaughters 30 men.
Beowulf hears of what Grendel has done and gathers 14 of the strongest, mightiest of the Geats. They cross the waters to the Danish shore of Herot where they will find Grendel.
Beowolf and Grendel battle in Herot. Grendel kills a helpless man. They both use only their own strength and abilities. Beowolf is so strong he grabs Grendel's claws and restricts all movement. Beowolf injures him, and he died from the battle wounds.
Beowolf battles with Grendel's mother. They fight brutally. Eventually, Beowulf wins and Grendel's mother dies. Beowolf returns home and rules over the Geats for 50 years.
Beowolf battles the dragon and gets wounded. All his men run off in fear, except Wiglaf, the son of Wexstan, who retrieves the treasure after B. kills the dragon. Beowolf dies and appoints Wiglaf as his successor. He is burned and buried in the tower with the treasure.
