Coming up with the safety features

Storyboard Text

  • Well you know how we tested out the 2-point restraint yesterday and although it worked it was definitely missing something?
  • Everyone stop what you're doing! I think I have come up with the prefect restraint!!
  • What exactly did you come up with??

  • Well what if we used a 3-point restraint instead of only going over your lap it would go over your shoulder too.
  • Yes.. I remember. I felt like I was going to go through the windshield when Herbie slammed on the break! Not to mention I have the bruises to prove it.
  • "It holds the upper and lower body while placing pressure on the chest and hips; a lap belt plac[es] pressure on the abdomen" (White, n.d., p. 19) It's a very basic design but I think that the shoulder restraint is the piece we were missing.
  • Why do you think a shoulder restraint is the answer to the problem?
  • Just listen!
  • When Preston had the 2-point lap restrain an Herbie slammed on his breaks, Preston felt like he was still going to be shot through the windshield. His lap stayed still but his upper body launched forward. If we restrain his shoulders then he won't fly forward when the Herbie breaks.
  • Just take a look at the design and tell me what you think.
