  • The Narrator talks about friendship with Dupin. And how they decided to live together. The Narrator describes Dupin as creative and analytical.
  • The Narrator and Dupin read about the murders in the newspaper. The testimonies of several people are listed in the paper. Dupin shows interest in solving the case.
  • Conflict
  • Rising Action
  • Dupin speaks with witnesses who recall hearing a shrill voice that sounded like a foreigner. The investigators discover that gold was not the motive in the murder because the gold was left there.
  • A non-human hair was found by them. An ad in the newspaper is looking for a lost orangutan. Dupin has a hunch that the orangutan committed the crime.
  • Climax
  • Falling Action
  • Dupin waits for the sailor with a gun. When the sailor arrives he tells of how his orangutan escaped him.
