  • Prometheus
  • You have to create animals
  • Ok
  • Epimetheus
  • I have created animals
  • After being spared for not siding with the Titans, in the war against the Olympians, Zeus told Prometheus to create mankind.
  • I have created man, and will give him the ability to use fire.
  • Prometheus gave the job of creating animals to his brother Epimetheus, whose name means "afterthought".
  • How dare you give the humans fire! I'm taking it away!
  • But the humans need it to survive.
  • Epimetheus, a scatterbrain, gave animals all the survival skills that they would ever need, such as strength and courage. This left none of the good qualities for man.
  • Now Prometheus had to make humans superior to animals. He did this by giving them the ability to stand upright. Also, he went to the sun and brought down a torch of fire to give the humans. Fire would provide mankind with great protection and warmth.
  • When Zeus saw the advantage fire gave humans, he took it away from them. Prometheus became angered by this and gave fire back to man.
  • As punishment for giving the fire back to mankind, Zeus chained Prometheus to a rock, so that he would suffer and be eaten by eagles.
