  • High Status/Noble Birth
  • Nemesis
  • Your fate is that you will kill your father and marry your mother.
  • I will not allow this to happen! I will leave and run far away so the prophecy will never come true.
  • Hubris
  • Oedipus is the son of a king and is also the King of Thebes, both positions of power.
  • Hamartia
  • Oedipus is doomed to make a serious error in judgement, since his fate that the Oracle told him is terrible.
  • Peripetia
  • Oedipus's excessive pride leads him to kill many men, including his father, the King of Thebes.
  • Anagnorisis
  • Oedipus's hubris causes him to attempt to defy the Gods. He thinks that he can evade his tragic fate, but his tragic flaw ends up making the fate come true.
  • A reversal of fortune occurs when Oedipus unknowingly marries his mother. He will later find out that he fulfilled his tragic fate.
  • Oedipus realizes that he married his mother and killed his father, as his fate predicted. He finally discovers his real identity.
