  • Galileo Galilei discovered many phenomenons that proved the geocentric model to be false.
  • - The earth's moon has mountains - There are four moons revolving around Jupiter - The sun is the center of the universe
  • The Catholic Church ordered him to abandon his Copernican ideas because they threatened the Church's entire conception of the universe.
  • I will not give up my discoveries and beliefs.
  • He refused to abandon his beliefs and so he was put on house arrest for the rest of his life.
  • By the mid 1600s, most astronomers had accepted the idea of a heliocentric universe.
  • Today, we have a better understanding of how the universe works because of Galileo's heliocentric model. We know that the planets in our solar system revolve around the sun, but the whole universe does not.
